Green Tea

Green tea is the most common and popular tea in asia and is growing popularity in the west too. Green tea is made from slightly oxidized green tea leaf. It is perhaps the most popular in Japan and is sometimes just called Japanese tea. In Japan green tea comes in different varieties based on how it is made and the quality of the tea. The types of green tea in Japan are Gyokuro, Matcha, Sencha, Genmaicha, Kabusecha, Bancha, Hojicha, Kukicha, and Tamaryokucha.

Health Benefits

Green tea has been used in Japan as medicine for thousands of years. Today there have been studies to validate the claims that tea has healthy benefits. Many of these studies contradict each other but claims have been made that tea may help prevent strokes, fight cancer, and help weight loss. Although it is hard to find the truth about the health benefits of green tea, it is obvious that this tea is healthy just because it is a no calorie beverage. It may be that green tea can help people lose weight just because it is better than a higher calorie beverage like soda. Compared with coffee green tea actually has much less caffeine and will therefore not slow your metabolism in the way that coffee will. So overall green tea has health benefits, one way or another.

Caffeine Content of Green Tea

The caffeine content of green tea is actually very minimal compared to that of coffee. Green tea has less than half the caffeine (by volume) of coffee. For this reason green tea is often thought to be a healthier alternative to coffee. (no yellow teeth too!)
